The Langland Family Be A Light Foundation

Registration is now open for the Be A Light Dance Competition which is put on by the Liberty High School Dance Team.   The event date is 11/1/26.  Please register your teams now and plan to attend.    The event is open to the public.    Registration is open until October 1st.  Click this link for registration :   

    The Liberty High School Award Ceremony was on 5/20/26.   We are proud to announce the 2026 Brooke Anne Langland Be A Light Dance and Difference Makers Scholarship winners.     DANCE:  $2500 Scholarship awarded to Leighana Rose  $2500 Scholarship awarded to Sophia Weaver DIFFERENCE MAKERS: $2500 Scholarship awarded to Makayla Beachy  $2500 Scholarship awarded to Mia Eastman

 Congratulations to the 2026 ISDTA Brooke Langland Memorial Scholarship winner Brooklynn Hupke from West Monona High School. This scholarship was awarded at the ISDTA State Championships at Wells Fargo Arena on December 4th, 2025. The committee was tasked to pick someone who had many of Brooke's qualities. Brooklynn was another excellent choice!

Congratulations to the 2025 ISDTA Brooke Langland Memorial Scholarship winner Cecelia Britten from Ames High School. This scholarship was awarded at the ISDTA State Championships at Wells Fargo Arena on December 6th, 2024. Cece was one of 100 applicants who applied for an ISDTA Senior Dancer Scholarship. The committee was tasked to pick someone who had many of Brooke's qualities. Cece was an excellent choice!

The 2024 Be a Light Dance Competiton is taking place on Sunday October 20th at Liberty High School. 

  Brooke would have been starting her fourth year at the University of Iowa this Fall. We have provided some of Brooke's Light by participating in the Iowa City Parks and Recreation department's memorial bench program. If you need a quiet place to rest or study, have a seat here and share a photo with us. The bench is located along the river trail just North of Hancher in City Park. #bealightforbrooke #bal

  For the Liberty High School Seniors Class of 2024 who are involved in Dance or Difference Makers, The Langland Family Be A Light Foundation is offering four scholarships. The Brooke Anne Langland Be A Light Scholarships: Senior Dance - Two  $2000 scholarships Difference Makers - Two $2000s scholarships You can download the scholarship application here .  If you open it in adobe, it is a fillable pdf.  The deadline for applications is April 15th, 2024.

The 2nd annual ISDTA Brooke Langland Memorial Scholarship was awarded on Friday 12/1/23 at the ISDTA State Championships to Stella Stelpflug, a senior dancer from Pella High School.   Stella plans to enroll at the University of Iowa in the Fall.

The 1st annual ISDTA Brooke Langland Memorial Scholarship was awarded on Friday 12/2/22 at the ISDTA State Championships to Olivia Warner, a senior dancer from North Polk High School.   Olivia plans to enroll in ISU in the Fall.   

Liberty's Be A Light Gathering is taking place Saturday October 15, 2022 and is open to the public. This is a dance competition celebrating the life of Brooke Langland.  We encourage everyone to attend to watch some excellent dance solos and team competitions and help celebrate our Brooke. The Brooke Anne Langland Be A Light Dance & Difference Makers scholarship application is now available on the Liberty High School website at https://sites.google.com/iowacityschools.org/libertyscholarships/home Deadline for applications is May 6th.  This year there will be two $2000 scholarships available.

The first Be A Light Scholarships were announced at Liberty High School on May 26th.  These scholarships were funded this year by memorials sent to Liberty High School in Brooke's honor.  Congratulations to Hailey Ankenbauer (Dance) and Olivia Hall (Difference Makers).  Each student received a $1000 scholarship.

The Liberty High Difference Makers and Dance Team remembered  Brooke as part of the Dance for a Difference event on May 23, 2021. Two Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry trees were planted in front of the school near the dance studio at the end of the event. Notes were written to Brooke on bioabsorbable paper. The trees were spaced apart so one day a hammock may be placed between them. Thanks to Dawn Bouslog for providing the trees.  Thanks to all who made this event possible and who came out to support the family. 

Troop 2000 from Coralville, Iowa has graciously planted a tree in memory of Brooke.  It is located near the play ground at North Ridge Park in Coralville, Iowa.   The tree is a Tulip Poplar.   Brooke would frequently put up her hammock under aTulip Poplar tree at home.
